PURPOSE :
Access to the Internet supports and facilitates teaching, research, and administrative function of the University. Use of the network must be consistent with that purpose. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to use these resources to their maximum benefit through these University-related functions.
USERS RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Internet users are expected to act as responsible individuals, to conduct themselves with honesty and integrity, both personally and academically, to respect the personal and legal rights of others, and to respect the integrity of University computer hardware and software.
EVALUATION OF INFORMATION :
The Internet offers access to many valuable local, national and international sources of information. However, not all sources on the Internet provide accurate, complete or current information. Users should evaluate Internet sources just as they do printed publications, questioning the validity of the information found. Many of these resources have copyrights that need to be respected.
Before using any Internet source :
- Examine sites carefully. Serious sites are authorized, state their objective/purpose and cite information sources.
Criteria to be reviewed :
- Consistency : author, content and whom it is addressed to (designation), location, objectivity (differentiate facts from opinion) and update.
Verify also by means of external sources e.g. encyclopedias or by "citation analysis" (what do professionals say about it).
VSM Library makes a selection of internet web sites which might be relevant to users needs. These recommended sources of information grouped into categories are available at the link Web Sites Directory.
CONSEQUENCES FOR VIOLATION OF POLICY:
As stated in Academic Rules and Library Code the University reserves the right to discipline users whose behavior is judged disruptive to the university, its operations and its primary purpose of teaching and learning. This may include the restriction or withdrawal of access to VSM internet resources, if this policy is violated.
