How to find financial information

Context

A common assignment in finance and accounting courses is to analyze a company’s financial statements, calculate some relevant financial ratios, compare them with averages for the type of industry or a group of the company’s competitors, and evaluate company stock information.  These instructions will help you use the City University Library’s online financial databases to find the company information and averages you need.

A.    Accessing the City University Library’s online databases

1. Go to the My City U portal  < https://my.cityu.edu  > and log in with your Username and Password
2. To start with online databases click on the link LIBRARY in the left side menu. Then select Quick Links > Online Databases.

B.    Obtaining company stock information from Morningstar Investment Research Center
      (it obtains 1900 stocks, 2100 funds, and more than 150 ETFs)
  
         
1. Select the database Morningstar Investment Research Center
2. Choose from Stocks, Funds, ETFs, Industries, Portfolio X-Ray or just enter Ticker or name to get a report
3. You can also click links to go to a list of Funds, Stock Recommendations or Stock Analyst Reports
4. In the Industries' section, click the link of your choice to get return information on indexes, industries, sectors or fund categories.
      Also download pdf reports on sectors located in the left column of any industry page

5. In the Portfolio X-Ray section you can check your asset allocation, sector weightings, and more.

C.    Obtaining company stock information

1. Select the database NetAdvantage
2. On the left side, click on the link to the stock information you want (e.g. Stock Guide closed-end funds, common, convertible-preferred,
    mutual funds, preferred, warrants, Stock Reports, closed-end funds)
3. Type in the name or ticker symbol of the stock/fund and click search
a.    If you don’t know the name or ticker symbol of the stock/fund:
(1)    Click on the blue LOOK UP button for a list of industries
(2)    Select the industry you want, click on the blue ADD button, scroll down the screen and click on the dark blue GO button
