1. A common assignment in the School of Business & Management courses is to research and analyze an industry. These instructions will help you find and use SIC & NAICS codes to find industry information and statistics.
B. What are SIC & NAICS codes?
1. The U.S. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system classifies business establishments and is used to provide comparability in statistics about business and economic activity in the United States. In 1997, as a result of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) was created to replace the SIC system to standardize comparability in statistics in all three NAFTA countries: United States, Canada, and Mexico. 2. NOTE: A business establishment might have different SIC/NAICS codes depending on how each government or research agency classifies it.
C. How do I find my industry’s SIC/NAICS code?

1. Go to the Census Bureau’s page on NAICS at http://www.census.gov/naics
2. Type your industry keyword on the search box in the left upper corner (e.g. tires) and search. This will give you a list of industry titles with the word tires in it. Choose the one that best fits your industry.

(2) Select and click on the company name you want (Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. (GT))
(3) Select the title you are interested in and click on it
(4) Then you can find a list of SIC/NAICS codes for the company
